Leech Lake Smallmouth Are So Much Fun

 The Smallmouth Bass fishing is getting better every year here at Leech Lake. I do a handful of Largemouth and Smallmouth trips each year, and they are some of my favorite days on the water. I recently had an hour and a half to scout out some of these scrappie fighters.

February and March Fishing Forecast - Leech Lake

With about a month to go in the season, Walleye fishing here on Leech lake has now settled into it's typical late winter doldrums for the most part. Mobile anglers can still catch their limit and then some by staying mobile and concentrating their efforts at dawn, dusk, and during  pre-frontal conditions. Small presentation details are critical now as well. Gold flutter spoons, hand picked shiners and glow teardrops are some good options to try out when the bite gets slow. More than any other time of year, punctilious presentations prevail for mid to late winter Walleyes.

Turning your attention to panfish now can really help fill in the lulls in the Walleye bite. Perch, Tullibee, Crappies and Bluegills often bite mid day and might even make you forget about old Walter. 

I'm seeing quality Perch now and it should only get better in the coming weeks.

                  Mid winter Crappies can be quite easy to find provided you are mobile.

Selective harvest can help ensure good fishing for future generations.

Has the Door Closed for Open Water?

The 2014 open water season has been a great one, I'm sad to say that it is quickly coming to an end. I am truly grateful to have been able to share a boat with so many great people; guide clients, family and friends. Nothing against ice fishing but I'll be dreaming about the ice coming off of Leech and our other great fisheries up-north, all winter.

Muskie Shootout = Good Times

I had a blast fishing the 3rd Annual Leech Lake Muskie Shootout with my bro this past weekend. It felt good to get into the money though it's hard to be satisfied after all of the big Muskies we had follow and miss our lures on Sunday. That's Muskie fishing...there is always next year.

Firetiger Shorelines and Feeding Fish- September Wrap Up Leech Lake

Fish have been on the chew for the most part. I have seen a definite increase in Muskie and Walleye activity during moon majors and minors so make sure you are on your best spots during these periods.

The big part of Leech has been consistent for eater sized fish.

June Walleyes-Leech Lake

 

Fish are starting to scatter a bit. It takes a bit of scrounging to get bites one day and then it's lights out the next. Spinner/crawler rigs and crankbaits have not produced for me yet so it has been a jigs and rigs with Minnows and Leeches deal. I had the pleasure of fishing with some great folks this week and have a busy week coming up. I got out Muskie casting for a few hours yesterday and moved a few really nice fish. With stable weather, the Muskie bite should really get cranking.
