1/24/12 January Shanty Report

I can't believe how fast this winter is flying by, already late January. Fishing has been consistently fair for me on Walker bay although I have had to move my permie a half a dozen times to stay on fish. I have been concentrating my efforts between 4:00 and 6:00 pm and an average evening consists of 2 to 5 fish per person with half of those being between 20" and 25". Between 'eyes, Pike, Perch and 'Pout, the fishing really hasn't slowed too much yet.

Once and a while you have to do the old catch and release into grease!

There is at least 14" to 18" everywhere I have checked. I like humps that top out at 25'-30' for eaters but I like shallower 12'-20' flats near a drop-off for bigger fish.

12/24/11 Tip Uuuuup!!!

I had a nice outing today with my wife and little one. We put tip-ups over a weedbed and had good numbers of Pike with a few big-uns. I was realy impressed with my wifes "start the mower" hooksets.

12/23/11 'Gills

I know, I'm not realy a panfish guy but I tried a new spot that I have been thinking about for a few years. I managed to ice a couple dozen above average 'gills and four small Crappies. I had so much fun I may be targeting those rascals again soon.

12/10/11 Early Ice Gold

I managed seven Walleyes tonight (14,17,18,24,24,25,28) in about 2-1/2 hours of fishing. Also landed a Pike and a decent 11" Perch. The four biggest fish came on a large shiner below a tip-up.

12/7/11 Report And Gear Check

I made a quick trip up to Upper Red Lake yesterday afternoon to try and ice some 'eyes and test out my new portie. I managed eight fish in four hours, all between 14" and 20". All of my action came on a Smelt colored Lindy Rattlin' Flyer sweetened with a minnow decapitation. (8 f.o.w.) The few that I missed then fell to my minnow rod (fathead). I later swapped out the tiny hook on this spoon for a slightly bigger one and it seemed to hook much better.

Cheers and hooksets!

10/12/11 Esox Lucius

With a full moon and overcast weather I was itchin' to get out and chase a few Muskies this afternoon. I didn't have one follow but the Pike were snapping pretty good. Not monsters but I managed six fatties between 31" and 35", all from one inside turn and of course the usual snakes too. It's a great time of year to catch Pike since the average size tends to run a little bigger and they seem to realy stack up in groups.

Water temps were still 59 degrees.

10/1/11 Kabatogama Family Trip

No Big Pike or Smallies but lots of 15"-24" 'eyes. The wind was brutal but the 'eyes stacked in the rocks in 10f.o.w. The best presentation was a 3/8 oz Jig and 4" Gulp twister tail casted shallow and snapped back to the boat. These were some HARD strikes for walleyes. What a great lake, I must go back.
